What questions should we ask during an au pair interview?

As a host family, asking the right questions during an au pair interview is crucial to ensure a good fit.

To start things off, begin by introducing yourself. This not only helps calm your own nerves but it also helps put your au pair candidate at ease. Share some interesting details about your family, your hobbies, where you live, your professional life, and some stories of your kids. Once you’ve shared what you want them to know, invite them to talk a bit about themselves.

Here are some questions you might consider:

About Personality and Interests

  • What hobbies or interests do you have that you might share with our children?
  • How would you describe your personality?
  • How do you handle stress or difficult situations?

About Childcare Experience

  • What previous childcare experience do you have?
  • Can you describe a typical day you’ve had while caring for children?
  • How do you handle discipline and behavioral issues?

Expectations and Responsibilities

  • What are your expectations from us as a host family?
  • Are you comfortable with the specific tasks we need help with, such as cooking or cleaning?
  • How would you prioritize your time between childcare and household responsibilities?

Cultural Exchange and Adaptability

  • What are you hoping to learn or experience during your time with us?
  • How do you plan to integrate into our family and local community?
  • Are you open to trying new foods or cultural experiences?

Communication and Conflict Resolution

  • How do you prefer to communicate with families about any concerns or issues?
  • Can you give an example of how you resolved a conflict with a previous host family or employer?

Logistics and Practical Matters

  • Do you have a driver’s license, and are you comfortable driving in our area?
  • Can you ride a bike?
  • Can you swim?

Final Thoughts

  • What are your goals during your time as an au pair?
  • Is there anything you would like to ask us about our family or expectations?

These questions can help you check the au pair’s suitability for your family and ensure a positive experience for everyone involved. Good luck!
